The Elderly Staying Home vs Moving!

Kurt Westergard

There are some things to think about as we get older and want to stay in our homes. More-and-more of the aging population are renovating their homes so they can stay safe and not have to move.

We have been renovating a few homes for retired people that would rather keep there house than have to move to a retirement home. Some renovations are easier than others. Recently we were asked by a client to install exterior railings at steps. The clients are very active people and want to continue to stay that way. The love gardening and have a “Walk-out” basement with concrete steps down the side of the house. We installed posts and metal railing along the steps for simple comfort while going up and down especially during winter months.

Installed posts with railing from gas pipe. Also added lights as well to light up the steps.

Other projects like renovating a bathroom and removing the tub and creating a curb-less shower floor that has a sloping drain. Removing carpet transitions and installing one continuous floor in order to eliminate a tripping hazard.

Changing exterior with no need for painting by installing metal cladding around windows. Installing gutter guards in the eavestrough so there is no need to climb a ladder to remove debris from the trough.

Home Renovations Tax Credit 2016

We have recently received many inquiries about home renovations tax credits and we have good news!

The 2015 federal budget introduced a new home accessibility tax credit to help seniors, disabled Canadians and their families pay for certain home renovations, but it doesn't go into effect until 2016. So now is good time to start planning for 2016.
